We created Sustainable Badges to make it easy for consumers to identify sustainable brands. Each badge focuses on a different aspect of renewable
and sustainable business impact. Choose the brands that align with your values!

Sustainable Employer

The badge for Sustainable Employer is awarded to organizations that go beyond industry norms to respect, fairly compensate, and enhance the individuals and communities included within all stages of the product life cycle.

To be awarded this badge, a merchant must meet a minimum 2 of the following criteria:

  • Fair Trade Certified
  • Communities related to any stage of the product lifecycle (from production of raw materials through manufacture, use and disposal of the final product) are respected and enhanced economically, socially, culturally and physically
  • Hand-made goods (provides sustainable income in local economies and reduces energy use/pollution created in machine manufacturing)
  • Manufactured within the country of incorporation (supporting domestic economies and reducing environmental impact from shipping)
  • Companies that provide full benefits, paid maternity and paternity leave, and paid time off to all full-time employees

Sustainable Health

The badge for Sustainable Health is awarded to companies that make products for human consumption and skin application to the highest industry quality and sustainability standards.

To be awarded this badge, a merchant must meet a minimum 2 of the following criteria:

    Food and other Products made for Human Consumption
  • Certified USDA Organic
  • Non-GMO Project Certified
  • Products made with no hydrogenated fats, artificial colors, flavors, preservatives or sweeteners
  • Vegan and Cruelty-Free
  •  
    Personal Care Products to be applied directly on the Skin or Inhaled*
  • "Organic" must contain at least 95% organic ingredients and be certified to the USDA National Organic Standards
  • “Made with Organic X" must be certified to the USDA National Organic Standards and include at least 70% organic ingredients
  • "Contains Organic X" must contain at least 70% organic ingredients and certified to NSF/ANSI 305 (a consensus-based private standard for organic personal care products)
  • * “Inhaled” products would include all types of diffusers, candles, etc

Sustainable Future

The badge for Sustainable Future is awarded to companies who demonstrate a strong commitment to the future health of our world and communities through their philanthropic business practices and product design.

To be awarded this badge, a merchant must meet a minimum 2 of the following criteria:

  • Products that give a portion of every sale to environmental causes
  • Organizations that provide a product or service to someone in need for every product sold full price (Ex: If you buy a pair of shoes, we’ll donate a pair to a child in need)
  • Co-op or similar business model that provides ownership opportunities and benefits to employees
  • Non-Profit Organizations, Benefit Corporations, and B-Corp certified
  • Products designed to be durable, repairable, and reusable (leading to potentially decades of use)

Sustainable Materials

The badge for Sustainable Materials is awarded to companies that use the highest industry quality and sustainability measures to produce their raw product materials and packaging.

To be awarded this badge, a merchant must meet a minimum 2 of the following criteria:

Fabrics and Textiles
  • Made from organic plant fibers
  • Made from recycled or re-used materials
Wood Materials
  • FSC Certification:
    • Forest Management Certification
    • Chain of Custody Certification
    • Controlled Wood (the highest standard for non-certified materials). This is evaluated according to the 'company' standard for Controlled Wood (FSC-STD-40-005) or through Controlled Wood Forest Management certification, according to the standard FSC-STD-30-010
  • Materials made from recycled or re-used wood
  • Rainforest Alliance Certified
Packaging and Other Plastic Materials
  • Biobased plastics – plastics made from plants such as corn, potatoes, sugarcane, and trees
  • Eliminates single-use products that can neither be recycled or composted
  • Hand-Made Goods

Sustainable Product Creation

The badge for Sustainable Product Creation is awarded to organizations that apply the highest safety and sustainability standards for manufacturing and distribution.

To be awarded this badge, a merchant must meet a minimum 2 of the following criteria:

  • Manufactured using the minimal amount of material and energy possible
  • Wastes and ecologically incompatible byproducts are reduced, eliminated or recycled on-site
  • Chemical substances or physical agents and conditions that present hazards to human health or the environment are eliminated
  • Work spaces are designed to minimize or eliminate chemical, ergonomic and physical hazard
  • Use of hybrid or eco-friendly vehicles for transporting goods or shipping

Sustainably Reclaimed

The badge for Sustainable Product Creation

To be awarded this badge, a merchant must meet a minimum 3 of the following criteria:

  • Used, Refurbished, or products that utilize reclaimed materials
  • Products designed to be durable, repairable, and reusable (leading to potentially decades of use)
  • Hand-made goods (provides sustainable income in local economies and reduces energy use/pollution created in machine manufacturing)
  • Made from recycled or re-used materials
  • Made from organic or bio-based materials
